"Lost between the medjool dates and budget hotels that line the lanes leading to Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, I stumbled across Mr Shakeel’s studio. Inside and out, every spare centimeter was covered with hand painted signs in Hindi, Urdu and English: MEHBOOB’S MEAT SHOP, AMBIKA’S GUEST HOUSE, ANAND’S CHAI STALL. A kaleidoscope of colour, it was snapshot of so much I loved about India.
For thirty years Mr Shakeel has occupied this dusty corner plot of Delhi 6 and in that time he has seen his business steadily decline. “People want mass produced, digitally printed designs these days” he gesticulates, brush in hand, “no-one has the time or appreciation for this type of work anymore”.
At HAVELI STUDIO not only do we aim to keep the unique art of sign painting alive, but also to bring a little bit of India into your home, business or special event. Painted onto mounted metal or framed canvas they are the perfect accoutrement to food stalls, parties or company events. They also make an ideal personalised gift or bespoke work of art for your home."
